Legal Corruption in the former Eastern Bloc; Czech Republic vs Poland

Poland and the Czech Republic are both culturally rich and newly developed countries in Central Europe, sharing many differences, and similarities, economically, socially, and politically.

In this article, a comparative legal academic research essay written by legal experts in the Czech Republic, Poland, Netherlands, under the aegis of an Italian law review (a truly European academic enterprise), the similarities and differences in the legal culture of the Czech Republic and Poland are examined. While both countries, due to their shared heritage in the Eastern Block, have higher incidences of corruption compared to Western Europe, both countries have taken a hard line on corruption, in order to close the legal, and indeed the socio-economic gap with Western Europe.

However, the conclusion of the essay is that the detected level of bribery in Poland, corrected for population size, is 15 times that of the level of detected bribery in the Czech Republic. This, in light of similar levels of perceived corruption in the population, show that the Polish legal regime takes a far harder and more pro-active approach to dealing with corruption.

The article connects this to the Polish legal culture, which is portrayed as being more focused on ‘ uncertainty avoidance and long-term orientation,’ while the Czech legal culture seems to be more laissez-faire.
